Sooo, odds are, it’s new to you, and so I don’t feel too guilty about not pushing the boundaries of the genre in this piece...
To be honest, I’m actually really nervous about playing characters tonight, and, like, acting or whatever, because I’m not really an actor. I’m just a homosexual. I’m not even an extrovert. I’m just a very loud introvert. In college, I’d always complain about acting. I’d say, “I’ve struggled SO MUCH and fought SO MUCH for the right to act like myself, the right to BE MYSELF, that to do otherwise – ON PURPOSE, no less – seems sacrilegious somehow!” Since then, I’ve changed my theory, but not necessarily my practice. And so, without further adieu....
The ensuing monologues depicted a series of American male narcissists, from a neo-conservative/imperialist twink raver, to a misogynist metrosexual aspiring performance artist.
Directed by Billy Rosen, the first version of Boi with an I debuted in July, 2005, at the Dixon Place Hot Queer Culture Festival. Lacey Langston directed an extended version at Collective:Unconscious, the following October. Karen Finley was performing downstairs. She yelled at us.
